Limiting or liberating? The impact of COVID-19 on your team and their performance – a design leader’s response.

Inhouse corporate designers will more than likely find themselves in multifunctional teams, and if they’re working for a global business, multinational and multicultural teams working across a number of time zones. Their place of work has usually been very carefully curated to reflect the values of the organisation they work for, as have styles of management within their corporate community. The annual cycle of activity is a well-trodden path, and KPI’s closely aligned to the business’s overall direction of travel.

Then COVID-19 comes along and we are suddenly confined to our homes. No corporate culture here. In fact, most of us would probably go out of our way to defend our patch from too heavy an influence from work. But overnight, work came home with us.

We spoke to Pernilla Johansson, Chief Design Officer of Electrolux in January of this year about design leadership, and her sculpting of time and space to create the enabling conditions for success. So, how in control does she feel today? What lessons has she learnt about herself and her team? And what are the positive and lasting impacts that COVID-19 will have on her business?
