The AGM

The DBA held its Annual General Meeting followed by a celebratory 25th Anniversary bash at the Heron Tower's Drift on Monday 2 July 2012.

In addition to passing the accounts and electing new board directors, the AGM saw DBA members pass a resolution to include clients within the membership and to bring client representation onto the DBA Board.

Changes to the Board

New Directors welcomed onto the Board:

Colin Burns - Elmwood

Erika Clegg - Spring

Simon Farrell - Tayburn

Steve Gibbons - Dew Gibbons
Oliver King - Engine

Members also re-elected existing Directors:

Jonathan Ford - Pearlfisher

Graham Hales - Interbrand

Will Rowe - Rufus Leonard

Jim Thompson - 20/20

DBA accepts client members

At the AGM, DBA President Laura Haynes spoke about the renewed importance of design in creating and maintaining innovative and market leading companies in this country and around the world. Recognising the expanding scope and strength of the UK industry, she spoke of a future that required a new approach that would engage both the creators and commissioners of design. In recognition of this need, the DBA, as the bridge between design and business, is changing its structure to include commissioners and managers of design as full members.

DBA President Laura Haynes announced the seven founding business members as Diageo, Buro Happold, HSBC Private Banking, Nestle, GSK, Arup and Virgin Atlantic – all companies who recognise the value of good design and who wish to move the agenda and continue to innovate.

Of these businesses Haynes says, “They have joined us, not just because they have design parts to their companies, but because they recognise the value of design, because they want to be part of our industry, they want to learn from us and they want to share with us”.

The client membership initiative has grown out of the client advisory group for the DBA’s directory. The inclusion of clients within the membership will enable greater opportunity for shared dialogue and productive debate between design and business, create greater understanding of the commercial value of design and promote high standards of practice amongst all members. Client representation on the Board will help to drive this new focus.

On passing this resolution, Article 5 of the Company's Articles of Association was amended by replacing Article 5(2) with the following new paragraph:

(2) Such persons whose business activities involve the provision, purchase

or management of design services as may desire to be admitted to membership, who comply with such regulations and qualifications relating thereto as may from time to time be made by the Council, and who may be elected by the Council to become members of the Association or to have their membership renewed in accordance with the provisions herein contained.

25th Anniversary Celebrations

The AGM was followed by a suitably celebratory bash where members from across the UK gathered for cocktails and canapés alongside DBA supporters, industry affiliates and special guests including DBA founding member Michael Peters and board alumni including David Rivett, Phil Jones, David Worthington and Julian Grice.
